Alchemy: 1: a medieval science and philosophy which aims to transmute base metals into gold, to discover a cure for all disease, and to indefinitely prolong life; 2: the power to transform something common into something special; 3: a mysterious transformation (adapted from Merriam-Webster Dictionary).
Law of Similarity and the Law of Contact: … the principles of thought on which magic is based…: first, that like produces like, or that an effect resembles its cause; and, second, that things which have once been in contact with each other continue to act on each other at a distance after the physical contact has been severed. The former principle may be called the Law of Similarity, the latter the Law of Contact or Contagion (Sir James George Frazer).
Collage: An art-making process using old, discarded, forgotten, and unwanted pictures, papers, and other things that, when put together, create new meanings and possibilities - and when performed with prayer and intent, may produce effects upon the consciousness, and perhaps, the physical and social realms.
In these objects some might call “collage” -
In these words uttered in the name of poetry -
there are attempts to enact pseudo forms of Alchemy
through the Law of Contact, and there are desperate prayers.
Together, they are admittedly clumsy attempts
to transmute collective death into transcendence, healing, and change.
“Clumsy” because we have nothing but found objects,
we are nothing but found objects:
broken and difficult to make cohere.
“Pseudo” because we promiscuosly (mis)appropriate
processes we have no formal training in, not knowing their effects….
But what if the collective burden, our pain,
our sin and our flaw - is the dialectic?
The seed of its own transcendence?
What might happen through daily death, birth, and play?
Come see the tricks of auto-maeusis and felo-de-se…
