New Community’s ArtSpace engages youth and adults in workshops and community-based arts projects that help transform and empower individuals and the neighborhood. ArtSpace is a multicultural gathering place for practicing artists and beginners to develop the creativity that abides within every person and place. ArtSpace provides an affordable avenue for artists to express themselves, share and gather skills, create economic opportunities and find fellowship with each other while adding significant value to the renewal of the Shaw neighborhood.
The ArtSpace offers low cost workshops and events to our surrounding Shaw neighborhood and the greater Washington, DC community for both youth and adults.
The ArtSpace was started in 1999 by Rachel Dickerson as an artistic extension of the principles of service that has espoused the virtues of New Community Church for the past 25 years. Today, New Community’s ArtSpace is a partnership between New Community Church and New Community for Children, it is an ecumenical space where people of all ages, faiths and walks of life are welcome to come together and find common ground through art.
The ArtSpace is a conduit for personal and community expression, empowering participants to find their artistic voice, celebrate the beauty of the world that surrounds us and expose what needs to change with powerful visual statements. At the ArtSpace we believe that art should be as accessible as the local basketball court or branch library.
Our classes and workshops are offered every season and taught by an amazing group of volunteers who are passionate about their craft and excited to share their talents with others. These volunteer instructors are working artists and educators with many years of experience.
